Ebony Sunala Johnson

Ebony Sunala Johnson is Head of Regulatory Affairs at Block, Inc. (Square + Cash App + Afterpay) and former Senior Vice President, Associate General Counsel of Consumer Regulatory and Public Affairs at Truist. She also advised senior bank executives on consumer protection issues and worked with regulators on formal and informal regulatory guidance during her time at the Consumer Bankers Association. Ebony has extensive knowledge of prudential and CFPB regulation, actively engaging from the industry standpoint in significant rulemaking, including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s open banking (section 1033), and small business data collection (section 1071) rules and the joint interagency Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) rule issued by the FDIC, Federal Reserve Board, and OCC.
Before her work representing financial services institutions, Ebony spent several years as Senior Litigation Counsel in the CFPB’s Office of Enforcement. There, she helped secure over $100 million in redress for impacted consumers. Her prior complex commercial litigation experience from her time as a partner at Kirkland and Ellis LLP informed the ways in which she conducted CFPB investigations and negotiated settlements to address consumer harm.
Ebony graduated cum laude from Howard University School of Law and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Air Force Academy. She served proudly as an Air Force officer before becoming an attorney.
